Nothing slows down a party like a long line at the bar. The fix is simple: have the right number of bartenders for your crowd. Here's how to figure it out.
The basic estimate
Ratios like these are estimates rather than rules — Shake & Gather determines the staffing for your event. As a starting point, one bartender for every 50 guests works for beer and wine service, and closer to one per 40 guests for a full bar or crafted cocktails, since mixed drinks take longer to make.
Factors that change the math
- Your drink menu. Shaken cocktails with fresh juice take more time than pouring a glass of wine. A focused menu of two or three drinks speeds things up.
- Arrival rush. Most guests hit the bar in the first 30 minutes. If everyone arrives at once, like after a wedding ceremony, add a bartender or pre-batch a welcome drink. Staffing a second person on restocking, ice and glassware is often just as effective as adding a third bartender.
- Bar layout. One long bar with two stations serves faster than one crowded corner.
- Service style. Passed drinks or a champagne toast can take pressure off the main bar. Whatever you choose, confirm that your arrangement suits your venue and your guest list.
Why it's worth it
An extra bartender costs far less than frustrated guests missing the speeches while they wait in line. Faster service also means bartenders can pace drinks responsibly and keep the bar clean.
