Planning an Outdoor Party in Chicago: Where to Host and What to Know

When Chicago weather cooperates, there's nowhere better to celebrate. From backyards to rooftops to lakefront views, here's how to choose an outdoor spot for your next gathering and what to know before you pour.

Your own backyard

The easiest and most personal option. You control the timing, the music and the menu, and a mobile bar turns any yard into a full-service party. Chicago's two-flats, bungalows and suburban yards all make great hosting spaces.

Rooftops and building decks

Many Chicago condo and apartment buildings have shared rooftops with incredible skyline views. Check your building's reservation process, guest limits and alcohol rules first.

Private rental spaces with outdoor areas

Lofts, event spaces, breweries and restaurants with patios may allow outside bar services, but policies vary and some venues require their own bar service. Ask about vendor policies, insurance requirements, corkage or service fees and weather backup space — and get the permission in writing before you plan your bar.

Chicago parks and the lakefront

Places like Lincoln Park, Humboldt Park and spots along the lakefront are beautiful backdrops for a gathering, but they are regulated. Chicago Park District sites require a Special Event Permit for outdoor events that include alcohol (and for gatherings of 50 or more, tents, ceremonies and other listed features). Alcohol at those events must be served by a company licensed by the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago, with security required. A private dry-hire arrangement doesn't automatically satisfy those rules, so confirm what applies to your site and date before planning a bar.

What to know before you host outdoors

  • Permits. Larger events, public spaces and street closures may require permits, and permit documents and balances can be due well before the event — Chicago Park District permits currently require document submission and balance payment 14 days prior. Start early and ask us what the site needs.
  • Weather backup. Always have a tent, covered patio or indoor option ready.
  • Power and water. Know where outlets and water access are for the bar setup.
  • Restrooms. Make sure guests have convenient access, especially for longer events.
  • Neighbors and noise. Keep music reasonable and end at a considerate time.
