The bar is one of the most memorable parts of any celebration, for better or worse. Before you sign with a bartending service, ask these ten questions.
1. Are your bartenders certified?
In Illinois, look for BASSET certification, the state's responsible alcohol server training. Certified bartenders know how to check IDs, pace service and handle guests who've had enough. Certification is one part of the picture — ask separately about licensing and insurance.
2. Are you insured?
Ask whether the company carries liability insurance, and how much notice the venue needs for the certificate. Many venues require proof a set number of days before the event.
3. Who provides the alcohol?
Some companies supply it (wet hire), and some have you buy it (dry hire). Know which model you're paying for.
4. What exactly is included?
Mixers, ice, garnishes, cups, napkins, coolers and bar tools may or may not be included. Get it in writing, and confirm that your venue permits outside bar service and who is responsible for venue-wide cleanup, bussing and trash hauling.
5. How many bartenders will I need?
A good company will recommend a number based on your guest count and drink menu, not just quote the minimum.
6. How long do setup and breakdown take?
Know when the team arrives and when they leave, whether that time is billed, and what the included cleanup covers.
7. Can you create a signature cocktail?
Custom drinks make an event feel personal. Ask what's possible and whether it costs extra.
8. Do you help with a shopping list?
If you're buying the alcohol, a detailed list saves time and prevents running out.
9. Are there extra fees?
Ask about travel, overtime, service charges and gratuity so your final bill has no surprises.
10. Can I see reviews or photos?
Real photos of past setups and real reviews tell you a lot about quality and style.
